In 2017, around 425 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes mellitus, in Germany the number is around ten percent of the population. Science and society are thus faced with major challenges. It is well known that lifestyle factors such as diet and lack of exercise in combination with certain genes are responsible for the development of diabetes. However, there is still a lack of precise understanding about which mechanisms are responsible. Only if science succeeds in elucidating these mechanisms will it be possible to develop strategies for prevention and hopefully – also for curing the disease in the future.
